Lighting for the crop, not for the frame
If the finished asset is 9:16 with a caption bar across the lower third, that is what should be on the monitor. Most sets are still lit for a frame nobody will ever see.
There is a habit left over from television: shoot wide, look at a wide monitor, hand over a wide master, and let somebody else worry about the crop. It survived into social because the cameras did not change, only the destination did — and it quietly ruins a large proportion of otherwise good footage.
The fix is not complicated. Decide the delivery frame before the shoot, put that frame on the monitor, and light the thing that will actually be visible. Everything below follows from that one decision.
A vertical frame is a different composition, not a crop
Cropping 16:9 to 9:16 throws away three quarters of the picture. Whatever balance the wide frame had is gone, and what remains is a column through the middle of it. That column was never composed by anybody — it is a leftover.
Composed properly, vertical has its own grammar. Depth runs up and down the frame instead of across it. Foreground and background stack rather than sit side by side. Movement toward the camera is dramatically stronger than movement across it, because there is so little across to work with.
The wide master is a by-product. The vertical is the film.
The safe zones are not optional
Every vertical platform covers part of your frame with its own interface. Roughly the top eighth carries the account bar, the bottom quarter carries captions, the sound label and the buttons, and the right edge is occupied by a stack of icons. That is close to a third of the picture rented out.
We tape those regions onto the monitor and treat them as unavailable — nothing important ever sits there. In practice it means subjects sit slightly high, product labels never land in the lower third, and any burned-in text goes in the middle band where it will survive on every platform.
The most common casualty is the product itself: a bottle beautifully placed in the bottom third of a wide frame, invisible behind a caption in the version anyone actually sees.

Light the column
Wide-frame lighting spreads effort horizontally — a key on one side, fill on the other, something to separate the subject from a background that runs across the picture. In a tall frame, most of that background does not exist. What matters instead is what is behind and above the subject, because that is the part of the room the audience can see.
Three practical shifts. Sources come in tighter, because spill onto walls off the sides of the frame is wasted. Backlight matters more than fill, because separation in a narrow frame is what keeps the subject from merging into the background. And overhead space needs treatment — ceilings are visible in vertical far more often than anyone plans for.
The efficiency gain is real: a vertical set-up usually needs fewer fixtures than the equivalent wide one, because you are only lighting the part of the room that will appear.
Shooting one file, delivering three
Most brands still need a wide version for a website or a screen in a lobby. We handle it by shooting open gate at high resolution, composing for 9:16 on the monitor, and keeping enough room around the vertical frame that a 16:9 extraction is possible afterwards — rather than the other way round.
One caveat worth stating plainly: this only works if the decision is made before the shoot. Reframing in post is a rescue operation, not a workflow.
Every clip in our library was framed vertically first, including the aerials — which is why they still read on a phone rather than looking like something taken from a documentary.
