What a thousand frames a second is actually for
Slow motion is punctuation. Used on every shot it reads as a filter; used once, in the right place, it is the reason someone watches a clip twice. Here is how we decide, and what it costs.
High frame rate is the easiest effect in film to overuse, because it makes almost anything look more expensive than it was. Which is exactly the problem: if everything in your feed is slowed down, nothing in it is emphasised, and the audience stops reading slow motion as meaning anything at all.
We shoot a lot of it — it is half the reason this studio exists — and the discipline we have arrived at is narrow. Slow motion earns its place when it reveals something the eye genuinely cannot catch. Everywhere else, it is decoration with a very high electricity bill.
The test: is there something to see?
Before we roll at a high frame rate we ask one question: what will the viewer see that they could not see at normal speed? If the answer is a real event — a droplet separating, a flame wrapping around an edge, a tyre breaking traction — the frame rate is doing work. If the answer is “it will look nicer”, we shoot it at speed and spend the light somewhere useful.
The clearest examples are things that happen faster than perception. A pan hitting temperature. An insect turning its head. Smoke leaving a tyre. None of those are visible in real time; slowed down, each one becomes a small piece of information rather than a mood.



Three subjects that only exist at high frame rate: a turn that takes a fifth of a second, a flame front, and material moving under its own heat.
Slow motion needs something fast next to it
A shot only reads as slow relative to something else. Put three slowed shots in a row and the viewer recalibrates within two seconds — the whole clip simply feels sluggish, and the moment you were protecting lands on nothing.
So we cut at real speed and drop into slow motion once, sometimes twice, per clip. The drop is a beat, and like any beat it works because of the silence around it. Our rule of thumb: no more than a fifth of the runtime, and never the first and last shot both.
If everything is slow, nothing is. The effect is the contrast, not the frame rate.
The light bill nobody mentions
Frame rate and exposure are the same conversation. Every doubling of frame rate halves the time the sensor has to collect light, so a shot that is comfortable at 50fps is two stops darker at 200 and four stops darker at 800. On location that usually means a shot is simply impossible without adding light — and a lot of it.
This is why high-speed work looks either immaculate or terrible and rarely in between. The immaculate version has a gaffer, hard sources close in, and a subject that was arranged around the light. The terrible version is a phone slow-motion mode at dusk.
Two consequences for a production day. First, high-speed set-ups get scheduled at the brightest part of the day or indoors where we control everything. Second, we shoot fewer of them than the shot list wants — three good ones beat nine noisy ones, every time.

Rates we actually use
Two things that ruin it in the edit
Retiming in software. Frame interpolation on footage that was shot at 25fps produces a smeared, rubbery motion that most viewers cannot name but can absolutely feel. If slow motion matters, it is captured, not generated.
Music that ignores the drop. A slowed shot cut against a track that keeps its tempo fights itself. Either the sound design opens up at the drop — reverb, a low hold, sometimes near-silence — or the effect is only happening on one of the two channels.
Most of the clips in our library exist because we wanted to test one of these rules against something real. The volcano was the most expensive lesson in exposure we have had.
